Dying Coral : Marine Savers
issue two : from the water's depth
Coral lipstick might be one of the biggest beauty trends of SS17, but how much do you know about the incredible animal (yes, you heard right, coral is an animal - a truly extraordinary one at that) that has inspired more than just orange lipstick.
Here are some of my favourite coral inspired lipsticks.
Being the documentary enthusiast that I am, I am regularly in the pursuit of interesting films. I recently stumbled across a new film called Chasing Coral. It really hit home and I learned things about coral I never knew.
If you haven't heard of coral bleaching, I sadly can't even call you out for hiding under a rock. But let me assure you it is a very real. All those awe inspiring colours that we reference for makeup ideas, those colours are disappearing. The coral is dying, becoming a ghost of its self. A devastating effect of climate change, that has an impact far greater than just coral.
Had diving the Great Barrier Reef on your bucket list? Best you book that fight quickly...because it's nearly completely gone. Just one-third of the GBR is unbleached. Once you realise how recent this phenomenon is, I have no doubt you will be just as alarmed as I am. Believe it or not, tourism might be one of the ways we can save coral! Here is a link to an interesting article on the subject. Just remember to use a sunscreen that doesn't add to the coral damage.
It is not an isolated issue I am afraid. Coral bleaching has been reported all over the planet.
What can be done?
If you, like me, want to do something about this tragedy - from both a moral standpoint and an upholder of beauty - I would encourage you to start by watching Chasing Coral. Dig deeper. Go beyond the surface. (All puns intended of course.) I have intentionally chosen to keep the facts supplied in this article brief, as I think it is paramount for us to invest time in researching our facts from the source ourselves.
If you want to know about how to use untainted products in thought-proving ways... I'm your girl. If you want to learn about coral conservation, there are more equipped teachers out there. Go find them. By taking responsibility for your own research into things that matter to you, you will undoubtedly make more of an impact!

Protect our Coral Reefs.
A number of our favourite untainted beauty brands are already adding their voice to this cause by giving back to coral reef initiatives.
1. Vanderohe give 10% of their profits to the Marine Savers Programme at Four Seasons Resort Maldives – a base for pioneering research on manta rays and coral reefscaping in the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
2. Aethic has been investing in a unique patent-pending eco-compatible formula of its own, proven completely safe for both corals and clams. This is the formula of Sôvée, the world’s first sunscreen to be certified Marine Positive.
3. Green People donate 30p from the sale of every Adult Scent Free SPF30 and Children’s Scent Free SPF30 Sun Lotion and are actively ensuring their products don’t put the marine environment at risk. The partnership has boosted MCS funds by over £30,000.
